Annual Field Trip 2019 – Hamburg, Germany

Our Hamburg field trip took us to Wedel, a small town near the mouth of the river Elbe to the Karl Zeiss Bird Station, a lookout post for numerous (water) birds viewed easily from several blinds. Five IFBR members and friends from three countries enjoyed our time at the center with an extremely friendly and knowledgeable guide from NABU (Naturschutzbund Deutschland). Although the weather forecast for that day was not that good, we just went and did not regret it. We were just inside when a shower fell on our heads, but within half an hour the weather was sunny and extremely pleasant. The birds also showed themselves well. We saw 38 species of birds, a number of them with young. The morning flew by and we ended with a joint lunch. In appreciation for our guide’s time we made a donation to NABU.
